The Douglas County Bar Association/Douglas County Criminal Defense Association Annual CLE Seminar will be held December 7, 2007, starting at 8:00 a.m. in the Jury Assembly room in the basement of the Law Enforcement Center. For any attorneys interested in being a member of the Douglas County Misdemeanor Assigned Counsel Panel in 2008, please remember attendance at this seminar is a prerequisite. Attendance at this seminar is free. Attendance at the entire seminar results in 8 hours continuing legal education credit including 2 hours of ethics credit.
LJ Leatherman is a partner in a Topeka law firm of Palmer, Leatherman & White, L.L.P., although LJ and his firm are principally involved in civil litigation, he has volunteered for criminal defense and among other thing secured a quitel for a defendant in Topeka accused of first degree murder. I have heard his ethics presentation before. It is more than a simple recital of cases. His description of the practical problems of administration of a law office, and how lawyers confront ethical problems in the administration of his business is presented in a very exciting and practical manner. I thought his presentation would be specially helpful for younger lawyers who are learning the practice problems of balancing the economics and client representation concerns of a solo or small firm practice.
Mike Clarke, a member of both the Misdemeanor and Felony panels over the years is in charge of a presentation that will introduce the young lawyers to many of the nonjudicial personnel and law enforcement entities involved in all aspects of criminal case processing.
Greg Robinson will make another presentation concentrating on gathering of evidence and discovery concerns (which relate to the gathering of evidence) in criminal defense.
Jim Rumsey will make a presentation concerning the trial of a criminal case from the defense stand point.
John Frydman will make a presentation concerning two of the most frequent types of cases, drug cases and DUI cases.
Bob Claus will present the final segment of the seminar. Bob is a former defense attorney, county attorney in Montgomery County, assistant attorney general, and as most of you know assistant district attorney in Douglas County, now retired. The emphasis of his presentation will be tips about how to work with prosecutors in resolving case problems.
